“Thank a Farmer for the food you have on your plate” is so true, but an important addition to this statement is ‘The Lady of the House’, who goes through the pains from dawn to dusk to make sure she takes the farmer’s produce and converts them into delicious, finger licking and nutritious food for the family, not caring if she ever gets to eat. As much as we have to express our gratitude to this Mother, we, at the same time, must recognize our collective responsibility to Mother Earth.

Cooking is the most important activity of human race; we work hard so that our families can get minimum two square meals on their plate every single day. There are evidences of cooking methods dating almost 1.9 million years, ever since the cavemen discovered fire and started cooking their meals. The pity, however, is that even in 2021, we have over 3 billion people worldwide using fossil-based cooking (coal, wood, cow dung) and most of them are women, who inhale the deadly soot coming that is emitted by the traditional cooking methods. From some estimates it is believed that on an average a lady inhales soot that is equivalent to smoking close to 100+ cigarettes per day and this has a devastating impact on her health and the health of her children, especially neo natal yet to be born children. The evils of Indoor air pollution have motivated scientists and innovators to work on clean methods of cooking like solar based induction cooking, biogas cookers, natural gas cook stoves and electrical pressure cookers etc. a lot has been done, but even more is required to commercialise these technologies so that we are able to provide a healthy, reliable and affordable cooking solution.

We at Ohm Clean Tech Private Limited (Company promoted by Founders of h2e Power Systems) have invested ourselves in developing an innovative solution for clean cooking as well as energy access. Using our proprietary SALT battery, we are able to provide enough heat and power to cook two full meals for a family of 5 and provide critical power back-up to a rural home. What better than using SALT to provide a cooking solution.

We have put special focus on the design, which makes it very easy and convenient for the lady to cook either while she is sitting on the floor or even if she has the appliance mounted on a platform. An appliance that does not need any fossil input, has zero emission, is maintenance free without any recurring costs and yes, it is very simple to use and 100% safe. I think we owe this to our Mother, Wife, Sister and Daughter. We owe this to Mother Earth.

We are privileged to have an opportunity to innovate and to serve millions with solutions that are inspired from our vision statement: 24×7 clean, green, reliable and affordable energy to all. And what makes it even more motivating is the proactive support from the government, end users, investors and the media. Our team based in Pune is excited to bring our product AnnapurnaMPEP (Multi-Purpose Energy Pod) to the women in rural India and other parts of the world in 2021.

AnnapurnaMPEP was an idea that I (Siddharth R Mayur) and my Partner Amarnath Chakradeo gave birth to and was germinated with the real-world experiences and efforts of our wives Bhavana Mayur and Jyotsana Chakradeo, with technical support from our vibrant team of engineers lead by Dr. Dadasaheb Shendage.

A question I am often asked, not just by friends but also by people within the energy fraternity, experts and government agencies. The most common argument is that Solar is getting so cheap that there is going to be a time soon where solar will be almost free, and so would wind, not to forget lithium batteries, which are getting cheaper by the hour. Ideal world, ideal situations. A solar and battery hybrid will be cheaper than the grid and we would have combated climate change.

Then why Fuel Cells? Often, I sit back and think, whether betting on Fuel Cell technology was the right decision I made for the company and for my Vision of bringing 24×7 clean, green, reliable & affordable energy solutions to all? And when I look back, 10 long years, where I have learnt a lot but not earned profits, where even a small business is a struggle, survival itself is at stake every single morning when I wake up. No doubt, I have a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal), and if I even reach 10% of the potential to that goal, our company h2e will bring fundamental and incredible value to millions who live in abject energy poverty & will bring recognizable profits to all the stakeholders who are important to my Vision Viz. The Mother Earth, Our Country, The Society we live in, Our Partners & Customers, Our Vendors / Suppliers, Our Employees and yes, the last MYSELF.

They say the Hydrogen Economy is coming, in my opinion it is inevitable. Green Hydrogen & Fuel Cells are a great invention and if developed well into an application-based format can be very effective & affordable source of Energy to the world. Fuel Cells combined with Solar, Biowaste (gas), Battery can deliver solutions that are perhaps cheaper than the grid, and yes, they are very clean and very green as well. Green Hydrogen will change the way we live, drive, work, travel, recreate, learn et al. The world will go through a tectonic shift, from Oil to Hydrogen. No wonder they say Hydrogen is the new Oil.

Despite the euphoria all around, the mind sometimes does get worried if going to the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell route was indeed the wisest decision, there are investors who have put their faith in my dream, my family who has patiently supported me for the last 10 years without expecting any luxuries & comforts, my partners & associates who have believed in me and are putting in their prime years of life to fulfill this grand vision.

Today was one such day, and my resolve to make this into a commercial success got solidified while reading a recently published article in The Economist and reading about a news on Tesla & California Wild-Fires. Some interesting facts:

  • During COVID-19 oil demand dropped by a fifth and recovery is jittery, but return to the old world is unlikely.
  • EXON-Mobil has been ejected form DOW Jones industrial average for the first time since 1928.
  • Petrostates need oil prices to be at $70 levels to balance their economies, today it is at $40.
  • Clean energy stock are up almost 45% in the last one year.
  • EU has earmarked 30% of its 880 billion € COVID-19 recovery plan to clean technologies like Hydrogen.
  • Joe Biden has pledged a $2 trillion deal to clean energy.
  • Fossil Fuels provide 85% of the worlds energy today.
  • Solar and Wind account for 5% of the world energy needs today and it is expected due to rise to 25% by 2035 and 50% by 2050.
  • The emergence of ElectroStates is imminent. Why can’t India be the Most powerful ElectroState?
  • Over dependence on China may derail the entire clean energy process. Chinese firms produce 72% of the worlds Solar modules, 69% of lithium ion batteries, 45% of world wind turbines. They also control much of refining materials critical to clean energy such as cobalt and lithium.

Tesla sent out a message to their customers in California, that please charge your batteries to maximum levels, with power outages in California you never know when would be the next opportunity to charge.

And one answer to this, Yes Fuel Cells; Yes Hydrogen! This is the holy grail. We have set out on a path to have a hybrid approach of combining all clean technologies into a solution for transportation as well as stationary energy needs and these are going to give a sustainable and scalable solution to the world.

This also echo’s in the Billion+ € Hydrogen programs announced by countries like Germany, France, Denmark, S.Korea, The EU and our Honorable Prime Minister talking Hydrogen, the NITI Aayog talking about a Hydrogen Action Plan and large Energy companies both in the Public Sector and Private sector suddenly talking Fuel Cells and Hydrogen. Notable are the initiatives by companies like Indian Oil, Ministry of Petroleum, Department of Science & Technology, MNRE who are in a constant quest to encourage innovation, new ideas, new concepts and are willing to patiently hand hold us Entrepreneurs through the valley of death.

And once again feeling the Hydrogen High, once again rekindling the pledge that I made in 2009 to the idea of Swadeshi Urja for a Swawalambi Bharat. Innovating business models once again to bring value to customers across the world, forging partnerships, bringing ethical and inexpensive ways to mass manufacture, integrating future technologies today. It’s like the Journey has just begun, a journey which promises to change the lives of millions, a journey that I started with a few baby steps and one that has now become a movement.

This is an Idea whose Time has Come, Hydrogen Economy; Fuel Cell Economy is ready to RISE & Ready to Take Off!

Arise! Awake! And stop not until the goal is reached!
Starting 2021 with this vibrant quote by Swami Vivekananda and the goal of course is to Innovate, Integrate & Illuminate our world with #GoodEnergy Solutions.

Good Riddance to 2020! That’s the popular sentiment across the world. With the COVID-19
Vaccine in sight, we can finally look forward to a year where we rebuild our world, a Healthy and
Prosperous world.

The lockdowns of 2020 have taught us the necessity of planning, the importance of not taking
our world and our life for granted, it has given us important lessons in ‘Just in Time’ and most
importantly made us Humans aware of our capabilities and weaknesses. That a vaccine could be
developed in a record 10-month time, is something that experts would have dismissed as a wild
fantasy. The Pfizers, Serums, Astrazeneca’s of the world have proven what a human mind and
human will are capable of doing.

I want to start this year by expressing my gratitude to all the scientists and pharma Entrepreneurs
who have achieved the impossible. Closer to home, I want to thank Mr. Poonawalla for his
relentless and untiring efforts to bring the most affordable COVID-19 vaccine to life. We shall
forever remain indebted to the efforts put in by one and all working across the globe on the Vaccine.

The clear blue skies that appeared during the COVID-19 lockdown were a powerful symbol of
how COVID-19 is a fast-moving crisis within a slow-moving one that it in some way resembles.
Like the pandemic, climate change is impervious to populist denials, global in the disruption it
causes and will be far more costly to deal with in the future if it is neglected now. We do not have
a Planet B, nor will we have a Second Chance, if we don’t act NOW!

Just like the vaccine for COVID-19, the world needs a vaccine for Climate change. Hydrogen seems
to be that vaccine the world needs, to win over the crises caused by Climate Change. Solutions
based on technologies that produce, convert, store and dispense Hydrogen are the vaccine
candidates that will rid us of the poisonous effects of pollution. Fuel Cell, SALT Batteries, SALT
based Air conditioning, e-Fuels from renewables are the key to preventing a catastrophe that is
waiting to happen. From industry to homes, every part of the energy consumption chain has to
become clean and green. It also is the right time for us to take adequate precautions, wear our
Climate Change mask and in our own small but significant way contribute to averting the climate
crises.

And while we try to win over this challenge, we must, as a human race, also look at Energy Justice.
The developing world and the have nots deserve access to energy in order to live a respectable
and a happy life and it is on us innovators and Energy Entrepreneurs to bring affordable and
simple to use solutions that can bring Prosperity thru Power to our fellow human beings who are
living under abject energy poverty.

I sign in to 2021, with my first blog and with a renewed pledge, both personally and also on behalf
of my company h2e Power Systems, that we will continue on our chosen path to fulfil our vision
of providing 24×7 clean, green, reliable and affordable energy to all. The real journey has just
begun. The future of Energy: Green Hydrogen is nearer and more achievable than ever before.
From the sun and the wind and all the waste we generate, we can create an Energy Independent
world.

I am reminded by a motivating quote by the great Albert Einstein:

I am thankful for all those who said NO to me. It is because of them I am doing it myself.

All it takes is willingness and a sense of urgency on part of each one of us to contribute and help
our planet. I urge all of you to join this movement to Develop a Vaccine for Climate Change. We
Owe it to our Mother Earth!

Wishing everyone a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous 2021. Hope the year is filled with GoodEnergy.

It is the same day 11 years back when I was struck and shaken with reality, it was Diwali the festival of Lights, the day that marks the homecoming of Good after victory over evil, the day we worship the Goddess of Wealth and pray for prosperity for the world. It was that day back in 2009 when a phone call to my Grandmother changed the course of my life. It was the day that gave birth to the idea of h2e and gave me the sole purpose to live; To make 24×7 clean, green, reliable and affordable energy available to all.

The world has come a long way since 2009, and 10 years later, we got the CORONA curse, and we Humankind were suddenly grappled with a miniscule virus that threatened our existence. While the world was already fighting to save our Planet, we had to look for ideas to save us from extinction. Over the last 10 months scientists and Pharma Entrepreneurs across the world have worked relentlessly to develop a vaccine that can bring us back to the Normal we once privileged ourselves with.

2020, reminds me of the movie Independence Day, where staring at a certain defeat, the leader of the free world, while marshalling his warriors said,

“We will not go quietly in the night;
We will not vanish without a fight;
We’re going to live on;
We’re going to Survive;
Today, we celebrate our Independence Day”

And with the efforts of all involved in the COVID-19 fight, we the world are so ready to celebrate our Independence Day, free from the Virus and back to the world we knew. But as we get ready to walk into a new world, we have another big fight at our doorstep, Climate Change! Unfortunately, we do not have a Planet B, nor the benefit of wearing a mask and washing our hands regularly to prevent the calamity that is approaching. We have to take in as aggressive an approach we have for beating the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Climate Change pandemic is real, unless each and every individual pledge to take small steps, we will not be able to save our Planet.

We have new leadership in the United States, committed to the Climate initiative and with a mandate to bring the change; not to mention, the unique opportunity the Biden Administration has to change the course of history by changing the way we produce and use our energy, by ensuring that America leads by example in the Climate war. On the other side of the Atlantic, Governments in Europe have almost declared Hydrogen as a cure not only for Climate Change but also COVID-19, with aggressive economic packages focused on the Hydrogen economy. Not to stay behind the Asian leaders have stamped their commitment on Clean Energy, countries like Japan, South Korea and even China leading the race. One of the largest energy consumer in making, India is getting serious with Climate Change, the Prime Minister heading the International Solar Alliance and the Clariant call for Energy Independence, India is on the cusp of becoming a force in the energy business by taking on the Hydrogen Economy as a focal point of its energy strategy.

Hence I say “Finally, There is Light”, we the world have long witnessed the dark tunnel and in the Post COVID-19 world, we are approaching the end of the tunnel, where there is light, where there is prosperity and where there is happiness. Prosperity generally comes as a result of good health, economic stability and mental happiness. Energy, is the key to satisfying all these three needs for a better world. God created our world as a source of energy, our body is energy; the convergence of different forms of energy will bring energy justice and energy independence to our world.

Yes there is Light, with companies like Serum Institute, Astrazeneca, Pfizer etc. coming close to 90% efficacy for their vaccine candidates, there is Hope that the biggest vaccination exercise the world has ever witnessed will become a reality, by 2021 we would have defeated COVID-19, fair and square.

Yes there is Light, with the new age development that is making distributed energy technologies like Hydrogen, Fuel Cells, Power to X, Salt Batteries etc. affordable and available to the developed as well as developing nations. Distributed energy generation may result in small counties becoming producers of e-Fuels and taking care of their needs for electricity and mobility. We are fast moving to a connected world, ready to alleviate our generations from Energy Poverty.

Going back to 2009, when my Grandmother on a phone call told me that she celebrated the festival of lights, without LIGHT. To her and many more across the world, your Son’s and Daughter’s are working hard to make sure that no lady suffers the soot of fossil fuel while cooking, no farmer will commit suicide because he does not have access to affordable and reliable energy, no mother to be will suffer the summer because there is no air conditioning and no one from our future generation will suffer illness and uncertainty that climate change will cause. We are marching into the Light, we are marching into a new world. We are moving towards Light!

Happy Diwali May the New Year bring lot of cheer and happiness to us all.

Breaking News to start the Week
Monday Morning Blues, experienced by residents of Mumbai, almost literally. With the tripping of the
Grid in Palghar area a good part of the Maximum city woke up to a Working Monday without electricity.
With the world moving to Industry 4.0 and SMART grids; from Coal to Green; from Oil to Hydrogen, we
are still stuck up with legacy systems built on the principle of Large Power Plants serving millions of
customers.
And with one snap in that Big Power plant, millions go without energy. Despite paying through our noses
for our electricity bills or at gas stations, we continue to get second grade energy services, and that inspite
of all the efforts put in by the Government, Power producing and distribution companies. In the post
COVID-19 world life models and business models are undergoing a fundamental change, life post-2020 is
going to be different, and then why can’t our energy grids think different? Why can’t we have energy that
is 24×7 clean, green, reliable, and affordable?

Yes, the technologies on distributed generation have matured and the developed world already is
implementing strategies to defossilise the world and at the same time implement cost effective & SMART
mini / micro grids that can solve the problems of T&D losses and also over reliance on large centralized
power plants.
With severe inefficiencies in the current grid and the growing renewables providing intermittent power
we are headed to a permanent state of chaos despite having excess power at the point of generation. We
continue to put good money after bad and to find solutions that treat the symptoms and not the disease.
The solution is decentralized energy and distributed power generation. With Piped Natural Gas
connections coming to most homes in Mumbai and other big metro cities in India, the country can look at
installing 1kW – 5kW combined heat and power Fuel Cell power generators that can convert natural gas
/ biogas into electricity, heat and water at a very high efficiency of 52% – 60% and the heat can be used
for heating & cooling applications. This will not only save on electricity bills but will also save on harmful
green house gases & provide a stable and reliable power to every home, every office, every factory. To
make the solution even more effective and in-expensive, every housing society must be mandated to
setup a waste plant that will process their domestic waste and produce gas, which can then be used in a
Fuel Cell, thus making way for a circular economy and reducing dependence on imports.

India must leapfrog to the Hydrogen Economy and start with decarbonization of residential and
commercial spaces with Fuel Cells or Hybrid solutions using Fuel Cells, battery & Solar. Projects like these
have been implemented with great success in Japan & EU countries and are now being aggressively looked at in S. Korea, United States, UK and other developed nations. Over half a million homes are enjoying clean and uninterrupted power, why not the millions in India?

And for all naysayers who say that the cost of Fuel Cell or new technologies is very high, “The Price of
Light is less than the Cost of Darkness”

The Powers to be must focus on promoting #Atmanirbharta in Energy, unless we have #SwadeshiUrja we
can never realize the dream of #SwawalambiBharat

The Future is NOW; The Future is Fuel Cell; The Future is GreenHydrogen!

In keeping up with their Commitment & Vision to provide clean and green energy alternatives at an affordable cost, h2e Power Systems / MayurRenergy
Solution (a Pune-& Boston-based corporation) in January 2013 signed a contract with the Fraunhofer Institute of Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS, Germany, to develop Solid OxideFuel Cell (SOFC) products for the markets in developing countries. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Siddharth R. Mayur, Managing Director h2e Power Systems / MayurRenergy Solutions, said that Mayur will develop a cost-effective fuel cell product which will help to solve the electricity situation in every Indian home.

Mr. Mayur has an ambitious vision: To alleviate the energy woes of the common man in India and other developing countries thus improving their socio-economic condition by getting them affordable, reliable and clean energy to their door step. This can be one prime example of entrepreneurship with a social conscience.

Mr. Mayur feels that this alliance with the Fraunhofer IKTS will not only help to develop a world class product at local prices, but would also help to train the rural youth on new and renewable technologies and thus provide respectable job opportunities to them. Apart from helping the population in the developing nations to get energy independence, this alliance also is going to generate high volume business in the urban residential segment in the Indian subcontinent. The Fraunhofer team is sharing Mr. Mayur’s vision and feels more than happy to be associated with developing a sort of a revolution for the Indian household and the marginalized farmers in India and other developing nations.

Mr. Mayur is confident that the development of this product will help an average middle class Indian household to live a load shedding free life at an affordable cost, help farmers in India plan their farming activity without worrying about proper supply of electricity and at the same time help to reduce the carbon footprint. This is a win-win solution for all. Mr. Christian Wunderlich (PhD), head of Industrialization Energy Systems department at Fraunhofer IKTS, said that his team was very inspired by Mayur’s vision and hopes that his team can deliver a product which will help to transform lives of millions in India.

One of the biggest opportunities of fuel cell technologies lies in establishing a decentralized electricity generation network in places where it is mostly missed right now. Envisioned is a micro power plant which will be installed in every house. This would not only help to replace polluting products like Diesel Generator sets, but can also make the grid as the secondary source of electricity. The fuel cell product uses hydrocarbons like pipeline natural gas or LPG to generate electricity.

The SOFC technology enables systems with very high efficiencies either as a pure electricity generator or as combined heat, power and cooling application. Mayur’s ultimate vision is to combine solar, wind, biogas and fuel cell technologies to provide energy independence to rural India and thus bringing prosperity and stability to the rural economy. Fraunhofer IKTS will develop the product and transfer the know-how to Mayur, who in turn will work on commercializing the technology. Mayur is already in the process of setting up a world class laboratory for fuel cells and also a manufacturing facility where the fuel cell stacks, reformer and other system components could be manufactured.

Local manufacturing is considered as key step to reach commercially viable product costs.Mayur, who also is a real estate developer in India, has committed to use the product developed in all of their residential and commercial projects. In 2014there will be prototypes in India, which will be used to demonstrate the products capabilities and also to get due approvals and permissions from concerned authorities.

Fraunhofer IKTS is a member of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Germany, Europe’s leading organization for applied research. The Fraunhofer model combines research in advanced technologies with customer focused project work including technology transfer to the client. The core competencies of the Fraunhofer IKTScovers high performance structural and functional ceramics and related technologies.

According to recent estimates released by the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, 6017 people die in Pune every year as a result of air pollution exposure. For every 10 lakh people in the city, 733 die from diseases such as cancer, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) caused by pollutants like PM10 (particulate matter 10 micro metres or less in diameter), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2). This is in addition to the air pollution’s role in the development of respiratory diseases, including acute respiratory infections and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Another 449 deaths in the city (per 10 lakh population) each year attributed to pollution related cardiovascular diseases and 78 deaths from respiratory diseases caused by pollutants, confirm that air pollution is now the city’s largest single environmental health hazard. The study was recently published by UK-based international journal Cogent Environmental Science which assessed human health risk across 10 cities in Maharashtra including Nagpur, Thane, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Chandrapur, Mumbai, Solapur, Pune, Nashik and Navi Mumbai. What conjures the majority of pollution-related deaths and diseases is the pollutant PM10. PM 10 consists of very small liquid and solid particles floating in air and are 1/7th of the thickness of a human hair. With a size of less than 10-micron diameter, the pollutant becomes a great threat to public health as it is small enough to be inhaled to the deepest part of the lungs, in turn causing severe respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Of greatest concern are recent studies that link PM10 exposure to the premature death of people who already suffer from heart and lung disease. “We found that Mumbai, Chandrapur, Navi Mumbai and Pune (in that order) have the highest annual average number of deaths caused by pollution-related diseases. In addition, cities having the highest annual number of hospital admissions due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases include Mumbai, Chandrapur, Navi Mumbai, Pune and Solapur“, says Kamal Jyoti Maji, a researcher from the Center for Environmental Science and Engineering (CESE), IIT-B. The study incorporated data of daily average pollution from 10 cities during a period from 2003 to 2014 and the concentration of pollutants such as PM10, S02, and NO2 were taken in consideration. The concentration of these pollutants were monitored and estimated by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Chandra Venkataraman, from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, in Mumbai, warns, “Despite proposed emissions control, there is significant growth in the demand for electricity as well as industrial production. “So, through to 2050, this growth overshadows the emissions controls (in our projections) and will lead to an increase in future air pollutant emissions in 2050 in India.” With growing number of industries, vehicles, construction and municipal solid waste burning, air quality in Pune, Nashik and Navi Mumbai has deteriorated throughout the decade. Since the industries are not too far from the city, there seems to be no scope of improvement of air quality in the near future. The mortality rate due to diseases originating from air pollution was recorded the highest in Pune in 2011 followed by Mumbai in 2006 and Nagpur in 2007. Air pollution related mortality is calculated on the basis of the epidemiological study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO). AirQ, a software developed by the organization calculates and establishes a relation between morbidity and pollution concentration. It comprehensively examines the linkage between environment and health for any given population. The way forward would be to reduce the source of air pollution, revamping the quality of air by sources which do not lead to the production of PM 10 pollutants, shifting industry to the city outskirts and understanding tools for development of cleaner technologies, technologies which can produce renewable energy or technologies converting trash to energy. These measures stand as a Hobson’s choice for us as health catastrophes arising out of environmental reasons are staring people in the face, in India
